This three-week journey will take you from the south part to the north part of Sulawesi comprehensively. It starts with a stay in Makassar, continue with all highlights in South Sulawesi; Bira, Sengkang, and Toraja. All excursions of the places of interest are covered. The excursions in Toraja will give you a chance to see the burial tradition and ceremony of the local. Moving on with a road trip to the Central Sulawesi, you will visit places for transit until you reach the Lore Lindu National Park with a visit to Besoa Valley where you can see megalithic sites across the area. Day 01 : Arrival Makassar – Hotel Makassar

Upon arrival Makassar, you will be transferred to your hotel in the city. Located on the deep-sea straits of Makassar, the city has a rich historical past. It was an important hub for the spice trade that ran between the Spice Islands of Indonesia and India, China and Europe.

Day 02 : Makassar, Maros Excursion & Short City Tour

Morning depart from your hotel in Makassar to have Maros Excursion. Walk through rice fields and limestone cliffs around 1 -1,5 hour (also possible to follow small road) to a small village (last few hundred meters can be muddy). Snack + tea in local Bugis house, from this house walk along rice fields (often muddy and difficult to reach during rainy season) in between 2 huge walls of lime stone to a small cave with hand prints. Same path back again. From Bugis house or nearby bridge by small peddle canoe back to main road, passing lime stone cliffs (20-25 minutes trip). Back to Makassar and visit The Dutch-built Fort of Rotterdam (Benteng Ujung Pandang) in the centre of Makassar is a well-preserved reminder of that fascinating past.

Day 03 : Makassar – Short Malino Walk – Bira

Morning depart from your hotel in Makassar to the cool mountain town Malino for having short Malino Walk. A guide takes you on a biking or walking tour through rice fields, waterfalls and old Bugis houses.
Continue depart to Bira for your next hotel. The town of Bira is only small and survives mostly on fishing. The inhabitants of Bira are Buginese a famous sea faring people.

Depart from Bira to Sengkang. Sengkang is a small and quiet town with a population that is almost 100% Islamic Bugis who dominantly live in traditional wooden pile dwellings.
On the way you will stop at an area called Tanah Tua, it is traditional home country of the Kajang. This tribe lives according to traditional rules, in harmony with nature that provides them with everything. Food is being converted, houses are made of wood and palm leaves and the clothing is self-woven and dyed. Kajang already has some modern changes accepted, but the adat is still strong. People visiting the village should be dressed in black. To get the village, you walk a half hour on bare feet (and back again).

Morning depart from your hotel to have Tempe Lake Boat Trip. From a small pier where you board a traditional colorful motorized canoe. The canoe trip will take you through the small Walennea River to the Tempe Lake, a lake that covers an area of at least 1.000 ha in the dry season and expands to around 35.000 ha during the wet season when all surrounding areas are flooded. On the lake, you can observe the local fishermen catch fish in different ways using nets, fishing roads and bamboo fences. More than 20 species of water birds can be seen at this lake. Some of the fishermen live in floating houses near the edge of the lake. You will visit a floating house to drink tea and coffee together with its inhabitants.

Today you will visit various Toraja villages and places of interest that are good image of Toraja culture. The picturesque villages are in one mountainous landscape dominated by rice terraces and bamboo forests. Although most Toraja are Christian today, they continue their traditions unabated. You can see the different ways on which the Toraja bury their dead. The famous one is the high rock graves that guarded by dolls, tau-tau. Also the baby gifts in special trees and the tongue king (the richly sculpted Toraja houses with striking roofs) and rice sheds.

Day 08 : Rantepao (Optional Tour : 2 Days 1 Night Toraja Trekking)

Today is free program for the whole day.

You can book optional trip two days hike by part of Toraja which is not often attracted to tourists visited. Walk through the rice terraces and through forest and dirt roads. Sometimes river passes through one Bamboo Bridge or wading through the water. The villages you encounter are very traditional. You spend the night in a simple house in one traditional Toraja village.

Today you will have free program.
You can relax at the hotel or explore the town of Rantepao and its surrounding. You can find several villages, visit graves and Tongkonan houses or take a short walk.

If you book 2 Days 1 Night Toraja Trekking, today you will trek around 4-5 hours, then you will be transferred back to Rantepao.

In the early morning you leave Rantepao and drive north following a winding mountain road. After several hours you reach the coast, follow this to around noon after which you head into the mountains again. You pass a waterfall and at time you can get out of the car to stretch the legs. At the end of the afternoon you reach the small town of Pendolo that is located on the southern shores of Lake Poso. The driver returns to Makassar.
You will stay in simple guesthouse directly located on the beach of lake Poso. Rooms are basic with ensuite bathroom (no hot water).

A guide will pick you up in the morning and together you board a chartered boat. You follow the eastern shore of the lake and make some stops along the way. You can walk to a waterfall via a small village and afterwards to a viewpoint. Around noon you arrive in the guesthouse that is also located on the beach of lake Poso. The rest of the afternoon is free to spend.

Day 12 : Tentena, Free Program (Optional : Waterfall Excursion)

Today is free program. There is no car available.
You can book optional tour to Saluopa waterfall. From Tentena it takes around 45-60 minutes driving to this waterfall where you can bathe in pools filled with fresh and clear water. The waterfall is surrounded by a tropical forest, during weekends and local holidays the waterfall is often visited by local people from Poso or Tentena, during other days it will be quiet. You need to pay a small entrance fee.
Your guesthouse also has bikes to rent with which you can explore the surroundings of the lake and Tentena.

In about 6 hours you will be driven to the town of Ampana. Here you board a chartered boat that will take you to Bomba in about 1,5-3 hours (time depending on boat type and weather circumstances). There is no phone signal during your stay on the Togeans (except some connection in Wakai). At all resorts on the Togeans, electricity does not run 24 hours, but mainly between 17:30 hrs and 22:30 hrs.
You will stay in simple wooden bungalows on the beach, basic decoration and bathroom (no hot running water and a mandi tray). All meals are included during the stay, these will be served at the same time with other guests. A troop of friendly dogs guards the resort.

Day 16 : Bomba – return by boat to Ampana – Poso

You leave Bomba in the morning and sail back to Ampana. Here you'll be picked up by a car and driver and drive in about 4 hours to the town of Poso. Poso does not have that much appeal, except for the fact that the town is located near the sea.

Day 17 : Poso – Napu vallei – Besoa vallei

Wake up early for the start of a beautiful, but long trip to the Besoa Valley. Together with a car, driver and guide you will be on your way, following bad roads here and there. Lunch is served en route in a small warung or a picnic lunch is brought along. You will pass the Napu valley where you can see some typical megalithic statues. The Napu valley is the highest of the valleys located in the boundaries of National Park Lore Lindu. The valley consists of vast grass lands. By the end of the day you arrive in the town of Doda, the largest town in the valley of Besoa.

You will stay in quite simple losmen with basic rooms that have their own mandi bathrooms (mandi tray and western toilets, toilet is flushed manually with a bucket). Breakfast will be arranged by your guide who will take the ingredients for it with him from Tentena.

Day 18 : Besoa vallei full day tour (walks)

Accompanied by a local guide you will go on some various walks to megalithic sculptures and vessels. Some are easily accessible, for others you need to walk further and at times over a more difficult terrain. Simple meals are provided.

Day 19 : Basoa valllei – Palu – flight to Makassar

In the morning you leave Doda and drive towards Palu, following a beautiful route. First you drive through the Napu valley again before following the borders of the Lore Lindu Park. The trip takes about 5-6 hours. You will drive directly to the airport of Palu for flight to Makassar. Upon arrival in Makassar you walk to the Ibis airport hotel.

Day 20 : Makassar – Flight to Manado – Tomohon (Optional : Kayaking Linow)

You walk back to the terminal of airport Makassar, you will be flying in the morning to Manado. Here you will be transferred to Tomohon. On the way to Tomohon, you can make a few stops at typical Minahasa sights.
In the afternoon, you can book optional tour kayaking to the lake. So you can do it more with its many to explore birds and hot springs.

Day 21 : Tomohon – Mahawu Volcano – Tangkoko – afternoon walk (2 hrs)

In the morning you can visit the large market of Tomohon notorious for the Manado delicacies sold there like bat, rats and dogs. Afterwards you drive up closely to the top of the Mahawu volcano. Following a staircase you reach the summit and the Crater Lake where you have magnificent views on clear days. You will walk halfway around the crater and descend on the other side of the volcano (partly stairs, partly unpaved paths). Afterwards, continue your journey further to the north to the Tangkoko Batuangus reserve, your Minahasa guide will say goodbye.
The forest reserve is relatively young where many fruit trees can be found. Many fruit trees means there are quite a lot of fruit-eating animals, including monkeys and hornbills. It is one of the few forests in Indonesia where you can observe animals very well.
You will stay Simple guesthouse situated at the edge of the Tangkoko Reserve. Simple rooms with ac (due to the low voltage, the AC is often not working properly or at all) and private bathroom (western toilet, only cold running water). During your stay here simple meals are included.

Day 22 : Tangkoko, morning walk (max 3 hrs) – Manado

Today you will visit the forest in the early morning. During this walk, you go looking for monkeys, hornbills, marsupials etc. This walk takes about 3 hours (if you want longer walks, you need to pay extra).
After the walk you have breakfast at the guesthouse and then drive on to Manado.
